The guest of this episode of Executives in the Wild, Kat’s journey has taken her on Amazon explorations to the Sea Change Row, a science-gathering row around Great Britain collecting ocean data and telling stories of impactful climate projects along the way. Kat also hosted the Blue Pioneers show on the Better Worlds platform before and during the Great Britain Sea Change Row Challenge.
Based on what she has observed and experienced in concert with Nature, she is passionate about the need for radical collaboration to address environmental challenges. Kat speaks with Executives in the Wild Hosts Diana Denke and Jessica Smith on the importance of creating a common language—through data and storytelling—that connects financial institutions, corporations, conservationists, and indigenous communities. Kat asserts that by aligning these stakeholders, we can drive real change and ensure that nature is not just protected, but actively restored. The lessons of Nature shaped her understanding of adaptability, collaboration, and leadership in both science and business.
A self-proclaimed "stubborn optimist" Kat believes that nature’s ability to regenerate, when given the right conditions, offers hope. Small local actions can lead to widespread impact, and the more we engage people through storytelling and lived experiences, the more powerful the movement for conservation becomes.
Join Kat to hear more about her fascinating experiences in this journey through Nature, and hear more about why collaboration is a key to our continued existence.
Trained as a tropical ecologist, Kat quickly became a global pioneer in the use of environment eDNA for large-scale biodiversity assessment. Among the most valuable lessons she has learned surrounds balance.
“I’ve learned that if you push too hard, you stop being useful to anyone. I need to spend time in nature, to step back and reconnect, because that’s what keeps me grounded and fuels my work.”
Kat holds a BSc in Wildlife Biology and a PhD in Molecular Ecology and created 2014, NatureMetrics in 2014 to put powerful tools into the hands of those who are tasked with measuring, monitoring and mitigating impacts on nature.
