Mission Rewild: Insights From Cain Blythe

What can the average person do to support rewilding efforts? Cain Blythe says the public should avoid "green hushing" - attacking companies that are genuinely trying to have a positive environmental impact, even if imperfectly.

It’s all-hands-on-deck if we are to turn the tide. In this episode of Blue Pioneers, Host Kat Bruce spoke with Cain, the founder/CEO CreditNature & Ecosulis, about his goal to rewild half the planet by 2050. Blythe explains his rewilding goal is to get degraded ecosystems on a measurable trajectory of recovery within that timeframe. It’s an important role for human ecosystem engineers to jumpstart the process in heavily degraded areas before letting nature take over. Rewilding focuses on restoring an area's mammal fauna and megafauna, then allowing them to do the heavy lifting of regenerating the ecosystem over long time periods. A key aspect is stepping back and giving nature the space to recover and heal itself.

Cain is hopeful, noting that once we allow nature to do its thing, nature can find its way back quickly.  From oyster reefs to wetlands to the return of large fauna, healing happens fast when we give nature the chance.

About Cain Blythe

Cain is committed accelerating global rewilding.

UK-based CreditNature was founded in 2022 after observing the disconnect between the natural asset value of land and the desire from investors to seek out opportunities for nature positive investment.  As CEO of the B-Corp Ecosulis, Cain’s 30 years of experience led to the UK’s longest-standing ecological consultancy and contractor, and the first business to set rewilding as a company purpose.

He co-authored a book with Dr Paul Jepson, “Rewilding: The Radical New Science of Ecological Recovery” about their discoveries in the radical new science of ecological recovery.

Together with partners, Ecosulis has contributed to hundreds of habitat creation, rewilding and species reintroduction projects including:

  • Reintroduction of beavers and pine martens in England and Wales;
  • Rewilding, biodiversity and nature recovery strategies for Defra, WWF, Severn Trent Water, Basingstoke Council, Gloucester LNP and Forestry England;
  • Establishment and monitoring of saltmarsh, wetlands (including peatlands), species rich grassland and woodlands for positive impact for people and nature.
